“The Ninth Path is called the Pure Intelligence because it purifies the Emanations.  It proves and corrects the designing of their representations, and disposes the unity with which they are designed without diminution or division.”

Sepher Yetzirah

Yesod, pronounced Yeah-sowd, means The Foundation.

Yesod is the home of both the Ego and the Etheric body and therefore the subconscious. If this concept is new to you let us try to explain it briefly.

Consciousness in mankind can be thought of as a series of layers from the densest matter of which we are composed, to the ultra-fine vibrations of the Soul and Spirit.  The journey of evolutionary life is to make conscious the whole vertical pillar of the Tree, from Malkuth (which follows next) to Kether, from which everything emanated.

Starting with so called “base” matter, life self-organises to produce higher levels of awareness on which consciousness can be built.  The intelligence of this self-organisation is that of Yesod. The mineral gives rise to the plant, the plant to the animal, the animal produces the human, but here’s the problem: we are only half-finished. Nature takes us so far and the rest is up to us.

Because of this the animal or etheric consciousness is still very alive in us, protecting our vitality but also driving our appetites. Whenever you read a myth where a character is half-man and half animal, you can be sure you are looking at an aspect of Yesod.

But Yesod contains much more than just our animal past - it contains all our subconscious links to the natural world and this is what we experience in sleep.

A study of where Yesod lies on the vertical pillar of Consciousness will show how essential it is to have the cooperation of your Yesodic forces.  Without them there is no route through to the realm of the Soul.

Yesod is very much linked with the powers of its planet - the Moon, whose cycles wax and wane as does the light it allows to pass from the Sun.

Court the Moon - you will need her!

On to the tenth and last sephirah, Malkuth.
